5 things to do in lieu of a live concert

Martin Garrix Live @ The Ether (Amsterdam RAI 2019)

Before the global pandemic, I attended an average of 5 concerts and 1 music festival each year. My last live (in person) concert was back in February so it has definitely been a while! If you miss going to concerts, here are 5 things you can do at home.

1. Check out an online music festival

There are many concerts and music festivals online, a lot of which are free. Personally, Proximity’s Digital Mirage is my favourite because of their lineups. But if you missed it, don’t worry because a lot of artists post their sets on YouTube afterwards.

Here are a few of my favourite sets:

Shallou — Digital Mirage Friendsgiving (Full DJ Set)

Dab the Sky (Said the Sky & Dabin) — Digital Mirage (Full Set)

2. Revisit old sets or radio stations on Soundcloud

There are a ton of great sets on Soundcloud and a lot of music on there that isn’t on Spotify. The best part? You can listen to these on the go when you don’t want to keep shuffling your playlist or when you’re trying to minimize your data usage.

My recommendations:

3. Support your favourite artists and consider buying their merchandise

It’s no surprise that COVID-19 has directly impacted the music industry. In Canada, the live music sector saw a 79% revenue drop from 2019. This year I showed a little bit more support by buying a bunch of artists merch — I purchased some vinyl records, t-shirts, and even this Boba Guys x San Holo collab kit because who doesn’t like bubble tea and music?

4. Create your own light show at home

Half the fun of a music festival is the light show! I bought this star projector from Amazon and here is what it looks like:

I have seen some really creative setups and will definitely invest in some LED strips next to enhance the experience.

5. Watch some Netflix documentaries

Netflix recently released documentaries of Shawn Mendes, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and Black Pink. These documentaries are quite informative as they show a ‘Behind the Scenes’ perspective. I personally watched Avicii’s True Stories (Rest in Peace) and Kygo’s Live at the Hollywood Bowl Concert which I both recommend!

Hope these were helpful. Stay home and stay safe friends!
